The idea of taking a protein shake for the purposes of helping you gain weight seems crazy to a lot of people. The vast majority of people in the United States are overweight or obese so it makes sense that trying to gain weight on purpose would be confusing to some. There are however, disadvantages to being underweight just as there are for being overweight. Mass gainer shakes are a great option for people who need to gain weight but have a hard time doing so.
Aside from unique circumstances, weight gain or weight loss is simple math. Caloric deficits lead to weight loss and caloric surpluses lead to weight gain. For that reason, mass gainers typically have a lot of calories and carbs. You also get a lot of protein in mass gainers but that is not the focus. If you are taking on of these supplements, you just want to gain weight fast. The best mass gainers are the ones with the most carbs and calories that also taste good enough you can actually consume them. The top two mass gainers according to these pre requisites are MuscleTech’s Mass Tech Extreme 2000 and Optimum Nutrition’s Serious Mass.
Each of these supplements has strengths and weaknesses. Let’s break them down to decide which one is the best overall mass gainer
Mass Tech is a monstrous mass gainer that requires 6 scoops to equal one serving size. The label gives instructions for how to take a 1/2 serving as well how to take a full serving with milk. If you do 6 scoops with milk you get a whopping 2,270 calories, 472g carbs, and 80g of protein. This is probably more than the average person consumes in one day and this is meant to be used on top of whatever you eat normally. This is not a meal replacement.
Do not even try to make this protein shake without a blender. If you mix 20 oz of milk with 6 scoops, you won’t even be able to fit the whole drink in a souvenir cup. If you use a solo cup or any other standard cup, you are going to have to refill it at least 3 times. This drink is very thick, but that is what comes with the territory when you have that many calories, carbs, and protein packed into one drink.
As long as you make sure this drink is mixed well, it doesn’t taste horrible. You have to remember that mass gainers are not going to taste as good as whey protein and other lighter supplements. The truth is, with the numbers that this protein powder puts up, all you need is bearable. It is a little bit better than that. This mass gainer actually tastes better than you would expect as thick as it is. It does take an extremely long time to drink. Even for a mass gainer pro, you are looking at around 15 minutes of drinking time.
Mass Tech is great for strength and recovery. If you can find some time to workout between drinking this mass gainer and going to the bathroom, you won’t have to worry about being sore the day after and you will definitely make some awesome strength gains. Between the amount of weight you will be putting on and the 80 extra grams of protein, you will be able to throw some extra weight plates on the barbell.
Serious Mass doesn’t have as many macros as Mass Tech but this supplement is nothing to sneeze at. The recommended serving size for this mass gainer is 2 scoops which are 4 fewer scoops than Mass Tech and about 200g less powder. You get 1250 calories, 253g of carbs, and 50g of protein. If the average person found out you were thinking about drinking something those numbers they might think you were crazy.
This is definitely a protein drink that requires a blender. If you try to use a shaker bottle for this you are going to have two problems. First of all, you will be hard pressed to find a shaker bottle that can fit this big of a drink. Secondly, it won’t mix very well and you will feel like you are eating chalk. As long as you use a blender you will be just fine. The drink is thick but you are consuming half a days meal in one drink.
As with all mass gainers, they aren’t going to taste as good as lighter supplements. Serious Mass is hard to deal with when it comes to taste but if you add a scoop of peanut butter it helps a lot. There is somewhat of a chalky after taste with this protein. Serious Mass has a lot in it so you wouldn’t expect it to taste great. It just seems like it should taste better than some of the mass gainers that have more carbs and calories but it doesn’t.
Serious mass is actually a pretty good protein shake to take post workout because it doesn’t take nearly as long to drink as Mass Tech does. You can drink it quick enough to overcome the after taste and move on with your day. You get great recovery and strength gains are also really solid with this product.
If you are looking at the sheer numbers, Mass Tech is supreme. It has almost twice as many calories and around 200 more carbs per serving than Serious Mass. That is going to make a huge difference when it comes to how much weight you will be able to gain. Serious Mass on the other hand is much easier to take and you are a lot less likely to waste it then you are with Mass Tech. It is an insane grind to drink 6 scoops of Mass Tech with 20 oz of milk. It can seriously take 30 minutes to get it done and if you aren’t up for the task you end up with no protein at all. At least with Serious Mass you can be more consistent with it.
If you take each of these mass gainers every day with the maximum serving recommended on the label, Mass Tech is superior to Serious Mass. Serious Mass is the safe play and might be better for beginners who have never taken a mass gainer before but Mass Tech is the better option for these two based on the ridiculous amount of macros you can consume.
